For many years, GHD has been involved in a variety of renewable energy projects in Australia and overseas. GHD has acted as owner’s engineer, conducted due diligence reviews, designed power plants, and conducted optimisation and feasibility studies.

Our capabilities include renewable power experience in solar, hydro, wind, tidal, wave, biomass and biogas systems ranging from 100kW (solar system) to 85MW (wind farm).

GHD has also worked on distributed power projects for buildings, plants and communities on a broad scale (ranging from 100kW to 30MW).

CETO Wave Power Generation, Carnegie Corporation

The Carnegie Corporation claims the CETO wave converter is the first unit to be fully submerged and to produce high pressure seawater from wave power.

GHD undertook concept designs for the civil/structural works, building design and the power generation system. Services also included project management, advice on the hydraulic systems, and an assessment of the marine environments of potential sites to identify local challenges and cost impacts.

Clean Energy Program for China

GHD has been appointed to deliver a Clean Energy Program, involving the construction of the 98MW Xiaogushan Hydropower Station, in the Gansu region in China.

GHD will deliver contract administration, project management, hydropower plant construction, environmental and financial services, and corporate planning.

CSIRO Energy Centre

GHD’s design for the CSIRO Energy Centre sets a new benchmark in ecologically sustainable design.

The centre features a combination of energy-efficient building services, such as active and passive cooling systems and small-scale generation units capable of delivering most of its power needs.

Hydroelectricity feasibility studies in Malaysia

Malaysia has embarked on a major program to develop its energy resources, with the provision of hydroelectric power as a core program component.

Sarawak Energy Berhad engaged GHD to conduct both pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, encompassing technical and financial issues, for the Baleh hydroelectricity project.

Oceanlinx – Port Kembla Wave Energy

GHD was commissioned to design the electrical interconnection and control system for a 300kW wave-to-energy system in Port Kembla, New South Wales.

The wave to energy conversion is based on a parabolic wall to reflect and focus the incoming waves, oscillatory wave chamber and turbine. Later commissions included a review of the basis of design and gap analysis.

Paul Wootton

Paul has 25 years' experience in the development and delivery of heavy industrial projects, in both consulting and operating roles. He has more than 12 years' experience in management of renewable and distributed power projects (100kW to 50MW) using both conventional fuels and alternative fuels (such as landfill gas, coal seam methane, biomass, municipal solid waste, CNG, LNG, synthesis gas and solar-thermal). During this time he has also had key roles in projects involving gas processing and pyrolysis/gasification of household waste.

Paul also has experience in the pulp and paper, above ground mining and bulk materials handling industries.
