Power Delivery

Power delivery (transmission and distribution of electricity) calls for analysis of power system requirements, design of transmission lines, substations and distribution systems, control and protection of such systems.

Whether it's a small, special purpose machine, a major industrial facility or an entire power distribution system, GHD clients benefit from our comprehensive services. Our experience includes the planning and engineering of overhead and underground high voltage transmission, and major substations up to 500kV.

Power utilisation systems cover:

  • industrial power and distribution, MV and HV drives
  • DC networks for traction power
  • power system communications (including fibre optic)
  • commercial building power distribution, lighting, communications, security
  • SCADA
  • security systems (including internal/external perimeter detection, CCTV surveillance and video motion detection)
  • energy management

Services

  • survey
  • environmental assessment
  • feasibility studies
  • investigations and audits
  • engineering design
  • procurement
  • construction management
  • project management

Aramara to Maryborough 132kV power line project

image

Ergon Energy Corporation Ltd wants to construct a new 32km-long, dual circuit 132 kV overhead power line between Aramara and Maryborough in Queensland. The new power line will assist in meeting the increasing electrical load growth in the Maryborough and Hervey Bay areas.

GHD has been commissioned by Ergon Energy to prepare an initial and final assessment report and an Environmental Management Plan (EMP) for the proposed construction of the new power line.

Coal to the Rescue in Chile

image

Chile was a country with a heavy reliance on hydropower and gas fired combined cycle. However, a crisis in the supply of gas to Chile forced many of the gas fired plants to swap to expensive imported oil as replacement fuel. The long term solution for base load power is the development of coal fired power stations and more hydropower.

GHD’s Santiago office is playing a major role in the development of new power projects in Chile and nearby Peru with significant roles in environmental permitting and project development. One of these roles is Owner’s Engineer to Colbun for the development of a 350MW coal fired power station.

Cogeneration plants increase energy efficiency

image

Two new 140MW gas-fired cogeneration units in Western Australia were the latest projects delivered through GHD’s long relationship with leading energy infrastructure company Alinta.

The cogeneration plants deliver more than 75 percent energy efficiency, compared with 25-50 per cent for other power plants operating in Western Australia. The recently completed cogeneration units are located within Alcoa’s Pinjarra Alumina refinery in the south-west of Western Australia. The combined output of the units is 280MW of power, and up to 840tph of steam.

Electricity Cable Tunnel

image

GHD was engaged by Energy Australia to explore options for electricity supply to the Sydney CBD. Options including overhead cables and trenches were examained, but a tunnel was recommended to avoid disruption to the surface and to the community.

The 1.5 km tunnel between Surry Hills and Haymarket was constructed using a roadheader driven method. GHD provided project and construction management services and was involved at all stages of the four-year project, including options analysis, preliminary geotechnical investigation, concept design, D&C contract documentation, tender assessment, risk management analysis and environmental impact assessment.

Lilyvale to Blackwater 132 KV Transmission Line

image

GHD was commissioned by Powerlink Queensland to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the construction and operation of a new 132 kV transmission line between existing substations at Lilyvale and Blackwater, in Central Queensland.

The new line, running parallel to an existing high-voltage line between Lilyvale and Blackwater, was required to meet the forecast increase in electricity demand in the southern Bowen Basin mining area, as well as to support Queensland Rail’s electrified coal network system.
