Window Rock paving and pavement rehabilitation project

GHD provided civil engineering and land surveying for two significant school projects in the remote community of Window Rock, Arizona, the capital of the Navajo Nation. One of these was the Window Rock paving and pavement rehabilitation project.

This project involved paving improvements on four separate campuses of Window Rock Unified School District #8.  Many of the parking lots, driveways and access roads were deteriorated or had completely failed as a result of poor drainage facilities, inadequate maintenance and inadequate pavement sections.

The school district wanted to have a portion of the paving work completed.  GHD’s geotechnical engineer assisted in determining which areas could be overlaid with asphalt and which required full pavement section reconstruction and associated drainage improvements.

The company prepared biddable construction documents on a fast track schedule and coordinated with the school district’s project management firm on the project bid and to select a contractor for immediate construction. GHD worked closely with the contractor and school district’s project management firm to deliver a high-quality paving project that would enhance the school's facilities for years to come.

Pavement Engineering

The single most valuable asset to a road owner is arguably the pavement system within the network. GHD understands that pavements are subjected to static and dynamic loads as well as exposure to the elements, so only sound engineering judgment, made by experienced and qualified staff, can provide cost–effective and appropriate solutions to pavement engineering challenges.

One of GHD’s key strengths is our innovative approach to sustainable pavement design. This has been achieved by our close ties with research centres of excellence at Delft (Holland) Wisconsin (USA) Stellenbosch (South Africa) Transit New Zealand UWA (Western Australia) and ARRB (Australia).
