GHD was commissioned by the Timaru District Council and the New Zealand Transportation Authority (NZTA) to carry out research and analysis eventuating in a strategy for alleviation of Timaru’s escalating traffic issues.
Possible solutions were researched and evaluated using innovative matrix gap anaylsis processes. Transportation planners “scored” the various alternatives on compliance with national policy, meeting local requirements, environmental impact and economic feasibility.
The resulting recommendation includes a combination of roading infrastructure, public transport, walking, cycling, traffic management and travel demand management solutions. With monitoring in place and flexibility in mind, the study will lead to a marked improvement in the reliability and functionality of Timaru’s transportation network.
