The Tangguh LNG Project is located in the south side of Bintuni Bay, Teluk Bintuni District, Irian Barat Province (formerly part of Papua), Indonesia.

It will extract natural gas from large offshore reservoirs and pipe it to a plant for conversion to liquefied natural gas (LNG) after which it will be exported (by tanker) to markets in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

The external panel assignment comprised of key activities including monitoring, evaluation, reporting and providing advice to the lenders on:

  • Environment considerations, as well as health and safety issues
  • Involuntary resettlement; and
  • Indigenous peoples and other social issues.

The Tangguh LNG project is one of the largest gas developments in Indonesia and is situated on the island of Papua, which also features one of the largest copper mines in the world. The local population, therefore, is looking for sustainable environmental and social outcomes.

Construction of the plant commenced in 2004 and is scheduled for completion in 2009. The Tangguh LNG Project is anticipated to have an operational lifespan of more than 20 years.
