Early in the morning on 30 September 2008, the kitchen of Mesa Public Schools’ Washington Elementary School caught fire. The kitchen was a total loss and school was in session. Mesa Public Schools immediately launched architectural and construction efforts to clean up the fire damage.

KWS Construction and GHD were contracted to provide construction services and architectural coordination for new construction and equipment, in collaboration with the district insurer Arizona School Risk Retention Trust, Inc.

The existing kitchen originally housed a student serving line that required all students to enter a small, narrow space to meet the point-of-sale window and access the food service from the multi-purpose space. This narrow student space was already a problem for student control, food service convenience and kitchen function.

During the design process, Mesa Public Schools seized the opportunity to improve the student service line and point-of-sale windows. The new kitchen has been re-finished with new appropriate floor, wall and ceilings. A new fire suppression hood is coordinated to new fire alarm and make-up air systems. All new Washington Elementary kitchen systems and equipment are fully functional as of January 2009.

GHD subsequently completed three additional kitchen projects for Mesa Public Schools – Adams, Holmes and Lincoln Elementary Schools.
