Barunga by the Sea

Having completed extensions and renovations to the Barunga Aged Care Facility, GHD was engaged to design and document the first retirement village in the Port Broughton region in South Australia. The client wanted to attract residents from the local towns and rural community with an affordable, well-designed and spacious retirement village.

The site, on the outskirts of the town, has a gentle gradient that affords views across the local gulf inlet. Site layout needed to take into account the number of residents and fact all the paths and roads had to be easy to walk. The resultant development provides gentle roads and paths with distant views wherever possible and large yards – a point of difference and appeal for the target market.

Havilah on Palmerston

Havilah on Palmerston is a residential aged care facility and retirement village development in the heart of regional Victoria. 

The project revitalises a currently unused site (previously Maryborough High School) into a sustainable development of a central town block.

Padman Health Care - Springfields

Springfields was the 2007 national winner of the Aged Care Association's Australia's Best New Residential Facility. The project is part of Padman Health Care’s expanding private aged care facilities range. Serving the northern sector of the greater Adelaide area, Springfields has been designed to provide a level of accessible, integrated and inclusive residential accommodation consistent with the increasingly elevated expectations of an ageing population.

Since Springfields opened early in 2007, GHD has continued its relationship with Padman Health Care, as architects and project facilitators.

Simon has over 30 years' experience as architect and project manager in a variety of architectural offices. He has experience in all forms of architecture with a focus on aged and health care facilities.

Simon has demonstrated skills in the management of both the design and construction phases of buildings in the health, aged care, church, industrial, hospitality, education and residential sectors, and successfully managed his own practice for 14 years.

Attention to detail and quality outcomes are reflected in the National ANHECA Award 2002 and ACAA Award 2007 for best new Aged Care Facilities in Australia designed for the Padman Group.
