Opening its doors in 2003, GHD in Ballina has grown to become a key regional consulting practice. GHD offers the full spectrum of services required by growing coastal communities and is committed to balancing development and ecological issues.

Our Ballina team provides services that meet the needs of local clients, particularly in management services, water and wastewater, environmental services, bridges, civil and structural engineering, building services, urban development, town planning, and roads and highways.

GHD in Ballina was the winner of the Professional Services Business of the Year and Safe Business Award at the 2007 Ballina Shire Business Excellence Awards.

The Ballina office, nestled at the mouth of the Richmond River, about 200km south of Brisbane, is one of six offices that comprise the Newcastle Operating Centre.

Ballina and Lennox Head Water

GHD was engaged by the New South Wales Department of Commerce on behalf of Ballina Shire Council to develop a master plan and concept design for the recycled water component of Ballina Shire Council’s Urban Water Management Strategy.

GHD provided a master plan to drive water reuse targets and developed concept designs for water reuse works and infrastructure including storage, reservoirs, pipelines and pumping stations. GHD also conducted a needs analysis for infrastructure upgrades, prepared environmental impact assessments and carried out the community consultation for the project.

Kingscliff Sewage Treatment

GHD was instrumental in delivering a complex, high capacity sewage treatment plant in the northern New South Wales town of Kingscliff. The plant not only met all operational requirements, but also achieved rapid commissioning and compliance with new environmental licence provisions.

GHD worked with Tweed Shire Council for four years to deliver the project, playing a key role in all stages from planning through to commissioning. The project was completed with the assistance of GHD’s Brisbane office.

Ballina Foreshore Master Plan

River foreshore issues are potentially controversial and need strong community and council involvement if they are to be resolved. GHD completed a master plan for the Richmond River foreshore.

The plan, which was developed for the New South Wales Department of Lands and Ballina Shire Council, has received strong community, council and government support.

Grafton Country Energy

Intensive planning and project management services have helped guide the design and construction of a new training facility for Country Energy in Grafton.

GHD provided full design and documentation services for a new training facility at Lawrence Road. The work included renovations to an existing building, a new outdoor covered area, a new workshop and a training room that were integrated with the existing facilities at the depot site.

Lester Gellatly

Lester has been the Manager of GHD's Ballina office since it opened in 2003. Lester has more than 17 years experience as a consulting engineer, being responsible for the design and documentation of a variety of civil infrastructure and building structures such as residential/ commercial/ industrial buildings, bridges, reservoirs, stormwater drainage structures and temporary works.

Lester has particular professional strengths in the area of structural design involving the co-ordination and management of multidisciplinary design teams. He has managed numerous projects from the initial concept stage to final documentation through to contract administration and construction supervision. These skills have been further enhanced by his experience in expert witness roles for building structures investigations. As a principal professional he also fulfils a Project Director role on numerous projects, providing leadership and advice to project team members as well as peer review.
