CEDUNA AIRPORT IN SHAPE FOR THE FUTURE
GHD was engaged by the district council of Ceduna to provide a concept and detailed design for a new terminal building for the city’s airport.
The design and planning layout of the terminal building caters for a peak load of over 200 people and allows for future expansion by maintaining operational continuity throughout the facility.
The circulation spaces provide for efficient and unfettered movement, based on a logical relationship and progression of usage between the services provided and the patrons. In keeping with strict security requirements, the concept design has maintained a clear distinction between public and secure spaces. There is also allowance for baggage screening processes, should they be required in the future.
The aviation team’s design philosophy focused on the natural attractions of the Ceduna region, with its open flat plains and coastline. This is reflected in the simple pavilion form of the building, the skillion roofline, material selection and natural light.
The building was designed with environmental considerations in mind and complies with the Green Building Council of Australia’s energy conservation requirements.
DOHA AIRPORT TERMINAL EXTENSION
Building on previous experience and similar project work for Qatar Airways at Doha Airport, GHD provided the architectural and engineering design as well as contract administration services through to completion for the two-storey extension to the existing departures terminal.
GHD and the contractor were appointed at the same time and the extension was designed and constructed on a fast-track basis which enabled completion in just six months.
The new section includes additional gate boarding lounges, First Class lounge and cafeteria, check-in area extension and baggage handling systems.
Innovative solutions characterise this project with the adoption of a number of initiatives to meet the deadline, including working closely with the contractor to procure equipment and materials during the schematic designs and specifying short bored piles and post tensioned floor slabs, which enabled a short construction period
